چکیده

Abstract This document will mainly be of interest to those who are re-implementing or extending “Choosing a Variable to Clamp” [1]. Most of the text is concerned with demonstrating a fairly straightforward isomorphism between forward and reverse-mode automatic differentiation applied to the belief propagation algorithm, in section 3. This shows that “Back-Belief Propagation” of [1] is performing similar updates to the “Linear Response” algorithm [3].

Choosing a Variable to Clamp: Approximate Inference Using Conditioned Belief Propagation

In this paper we propose an algorithm for approximate inference on graphical models based on belief propagation (BP). Our algorithm is an approximate version of Cutset Conditioning, in which a subset of variables is instantiated to make the rest of the graph singly connected. We relax the constraint of single-connectedness, and select variables one at a time for conditioning, running belief pro...

Locally Conditioned Belief Propagation

Conditioned Belief Propagation (CBP) is an algorithm for approximate inference in probabilistic graphical models. It works by conditioning on a subset of variables and solving the remainder using loopy Belief Propagation. Unfortunately, CBP’s runtime scales exponentially in the number of conditioned variables. Locally Conditioned Belief Propagation (LCBP) approximates the results of CBP by trea...

Stable Directed Belief Propagation in Gaussian DAGs using the auxiliary variable trick

We consider approximate inference in a class of switching linear Gaussian State Space models which includes the switching Kalman Filter and the more general case of switch transitions dependent on the continuous hidden state. The method is a novel form of Gaussian sum smoother consisting of a single forward and backward pass, and compares favourably against a range of competing techniques, incl...

Finding the M Most Probable Configurations using Loopy Belief Propagation

Loopy belief propagation (BP) has been successfully used in a number of difficult graphical models to find the most probable configuration of the hidden variables. In applications ranging from protein folding to image analysis one would like to find not just the best configuration but rather the top M . While this problem has been solved using the junction tree formalism, in many real world pro...

Penalized Expectation Propagation for Graphical Models over Strings

We present penalized expectation propagation (PEP), a novel algorithm for approximate inference in graphical models. Expectation propagation is a variant of loopy belief propagation that keeps messages tractable by projecting them back into a given family of functions. Our extension, PEP, uses a structuredsparsity penalty to encourage simple messages, thus balancing speed and accuracy. We speci...
